Mainstream and independent films


Mainstream and independent films are both regulated by the BBFC. The British Board of Film Classification is a non governmental organisation founded by the film industry in 1912.Vertical Gratification is how the company maximises the income, it is top down meaning they own all the stages they need to market it.

 Black Panther is an example of a mainstream film so it has a high budget this is shown in the trailer through the set design and costumes , we can tell it is a mainstream film through certain elements ,such as how the  characters are clearly defined , there is clear distinction between the here and the villain. This is done through stereotyping, it allows the audience to gain a quick understanding of who the characters are and what their roles are in the film.Like many other mainstream films Black Panther tends to have a simple narrative structure, this is done in order to attract the highest target audience , as they want everyone to understand. Additionally, the film is very action based , the marketing shows this through the trailer as it is fast moving and clearly shows fighting within the trailer. This is what makes the trailer visually appealing ,therefore will attract more of a audience as the effects used intrigue the audience to watch the film, they're main focus is selling the film is most important film as a mainstream film. The genre of the film makes it even more marketable as it is popular, furthermore, Marvel already has a fan base so they already have a huge audience they know they will watch the film. However, Black Panther has little actors/actresses who are extremely famous ,which is unusual for mainstream films, this is . The director Ryan cooler is not a typical mainstream director, this breaks the rules of mainstream directors as they tend to be big well known directors.In the trailer we see various locations which could indicate the high budget,also the editing such as CGI is up to a high standards. 

Although though independent films such as Lady Bird are nearly the opposite of this,they do not use famous actors for there characters. In Addition, the characters have a more complex and realistic backgrounds. This is the same for the narrative , the themes are realistic and is involved around the fact that it is a low budget film,because of this it would be realised in less cinemas. Independent films are different in terms of how the director inputs into the film, Lady Bird was influenced by Greta Gerwig creative signature. This is shown through the trailer when it was marketed, the characters were more relatable and the storyline portrayed had many unusual  themes such as Christianity. Furthermore, Lady Bird is set in one or two places which links to the fact in is a independent film
To conclude, there is a clear distinction shown through Black Panther and Lady Bird due to the fact that they are different film types.

Representation of women in music videos.

In this modern day era of music videos women are frequently presented as sex objects as they are wearing provocative clothing or erotic dancing is shown. This is also shown by the clothes they are wearing .An example of a music video that shows this is 'He like that' Fifth Harmony as they were wearing leotards and there dancing was sexualised . however they are represented as what would be considered an ideal body type by the media ,this puts the message across that this is how we should look.The media uses the stereotype of the way you dress determines how sexually available you are. The reason this is done is to attract a male target audience, as stereotypically men like to see women being sexy ,which could be classified as entertaining as part of the Uses and Gratification Theory. Tide is a historical print based ad from the 1950s; the ad is produced by proctor and gamble. The ideas attitudes and beliefs are outdated. In addition, the ad came out at the time of the post war, Americas technology developed rapidly especially within the domestic sphere. These products became desirable and symbolized status related to the American dream. Adverts such as tide in American melodramas, due to this these programs became known as soap dramas. The ad use hyperbole and explanation marks make the product seem essential to the target audience.
