The bridge season 3 episode 1

narrative

The bridge generally starts of with a dead body and has  long form narrative. Plots and subplots follow through into each season and episode which causes enigmas to occur. enigma also occurs when new characters appear on screen as we wonder if they are the killer , to add to this things they do raises suspicion of each character. Additionally, the narrative tends to be restricted as we do not necessarily know anymore than Saga who is the main character.

Genre codes
In the bridge it follows typical conventions of a crime drama , for example the way the characters are presented. When applying this to The Bridge Saga is the detective who follows stereotypes in crime dramas and she barely has a life outside her job also, she socially awkward. furthermore , you have her sidekick Hanne, yet again this follows conventions of a crime drama as this structure of characters is clearly shown in many characters such as Life on mars.

Technical codes
Within the fall the technical helps set the gloomy mood of the crime drama. The use of camera in the crime drama tends to be unrestricted to what is shows ,this is done to convey the message of this is the real world. Moreover the visual codes in The Bridge implies jeopardy, this is shown through lighting ,at many times in the episode the lighting is dim which suggests the idea that they are tackling the world's deepest elements ie murder. An example of this is when they find the body with the dolls in this scene the lighting is very blue which suggests coldness, this could symbolise how cold hearted the crime was as someone removed the heart. The mise en scene in the episode explores social issues such as the idea that the nuclear family is declining due to popular social movements, this is explored in the bridge through use of props as the dolls clearly indicate the iconography of the nuclear family and returning back to tradition then away from modernity.

Representation
In season 3 episode 1 the victim is a female activist and from knowledge from previous episode the victims were females so this may suggest females are vulnerable .However the ‘sidekick’ in this episode is represented as a strong, independent and decisive women which almost juxtaposes the previous point. As well as gender representation , the representation of national identity is conveyed, for example swedish characters seen are very acceptant of social movements are ahead of times with aspects as gay marriage as Sweden passed the gay marriage act in 2009 which was three years before Denmark.

Representation of the main character.

Sagas methods in the are shown to be trying to gain specific information and creating links. Her personality seems to be weird and she is almost uneducated in how to interact with others. In addition her character's personality  appears to be socially awkward and potentially on the autistic spectrum. It's not easy to identify with Saga as we mostly only see the work aspect of her life which is dealing with serious crimes, therefore most of the audience may struggle to identify with her. Although towards the end we see a sense of her personal life and get the idea that she hates her parents.
